Goodreads Summary:
England, 1883. Still recovering from the loss of her beloved sister, Evelyn is determined to use her powers to save other gifted people from those who would harm them. But when her rescue of a young telekinetic girl goes terribly wrong, Evelyn finds herself indebted to a secret society devoted to recruiting and protecting people like Evelyn and her friends.

As she follows the Society’s orders, healing the sick and embarking on perilous recruitment missions, Evelyn sees her problems disappear. Her reputation is repaired, her friends are provided for, and her parents are newly wealthy. She reunites with the dashing Mr. Kent and recovers the reclusive Mr. Braddock (who has much less to brood over now that the Society can help him to control his dangerous power). But Evelyn can’t help fearing the Society is more sinister than it appears...

Top Ten Favourite Book Covers

I'm madly in love with the covers to the These Vicious Masks series so I asked Tarun and Kelly to share their favourite book covers with me! Here are their choices ;)

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba BrayA Great and Terrible Beauty - Libba Bray
This is one of the books that got Kelly into Victorian fantasy/romance back when it first came out. When we submitted our manuscript to Swoon Reads, we actually used this for inspiration to make our amateur cover.

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnisA Madness So Discreet - Mindy McGinnis
This one caught our eye back when we were thinking about cover concepts for These Vicious Masks. We’re big fans of painting-esque covers depicting a single scene or a moment that sticks in your brain and this (slightly horrifying) one, fit the bill.

The Library of Fates by Aditi KhoranaThe Library of Fates - Aditi Khorana
This one is so uniquely, unabashedly Indian and bad-ass. We’re always here for that.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh BardugoCrooked Kingdom – Leigh Bardugo
We love designs that make creative use out of negative space and this one totally one-upped the cover of Six of Crows like sequel covers should! (Also fun fact: the brilliant Rich Deas, one of the designers of this, also did the design for These Vicious Masks!)

Jackaby by William RitterJackaby - William Ritter
This was another one we emailed to the Swoon team as an example of a design we loved. The striking color scheme never failed to catch our eyes in bookstores.

Love, Lies and Spies by Cindy AnsteyLove, Lies and Spies - Cindy Anstey
Another Swoon Reads title! And if you love discussing and picking favorite covers, check out the Swoon Reads blog! They let readers participate in the cover choosing process by putting up five cover options for each of their selected books and choosing the one with the most votes. We both independently voted for this one and were very happy to see it win! Adorable, elegant, hilarious and reminiscent of Penguin Classics covers!

Allegedly by Tiffany D. JacksonAllegedly - Tiffany D. Jackson
We think this is one of the most arresting, striking covers in recent years. We immediately needed to know who this girl was. (And then were blown away by the answer!)

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya MenonWhen Dimple Met Rishi - Sandhya Menon
Kelly was lucky enough to read this hilarious rom-com already and the cover just fills us with joy. The coffee, the huge grin, the summery brightness - it feels just as cheeky and smart and joyful as the book is. Plus, Tarun thinks it’s nice to see a coffee cup with Indian names spelled correctly.

A Crown of Wishes by Roshani ChokshiA Crown of Wishes - Roshani Chokshi
Gorgeous color scheme! A single moment looking like a painting! Classical and bad-ass Indian elements! Notice a pattern?

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri ManiscalcoStalking Jack The Ripper - Kerri Maniscalco
Stalking Jack has everything we love: a vibrant dominating color, a dangerous girl in a gown, and Victorian London hovering in the fog. Our fingers itched to get to the story!

Tarun Shanker and Kelly ZekasAUTHOR BIO:
Tarun and Kelly met in a freshman year writing class at NYU and started writing These Vicious Masks a few years later.

Tarun is a writer living in Los Angeles whose idea of paradise consists of kung-fu movies, David Bowie and chai tea. Since completing his first horrible screenplay in high school, he’s written everything from one-act plays and film criticism to humor pieces and strongly-worded emails. He’s also magnetized, crushed and burned the hard drive where that first screenplay can be found.

Kelly is a writer and actor living in NYC. YA is her absolute favorite thing on earth other than cupcakes and she has spent many hours crying over fictional deaths. She also started reading Harlequin romances at a possibly too early age (12?), and still loves a good paperback romance.
